DEFORMATIONS OF FOOT AND TOES

Point of view (V.S. Tolkachov, V.V. Tolkachov)

Deformation of the foot and toes refers to the widespread diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The disease is observed in 15-20% of the adult population. Women have  about 5 times more often than men, which is probably due to the peculiarities of the structure of the female skeleton, the muscular-ligamentous apparatus, preference to wear a certain type of shoes. Age also matters. It is believed that, foremost the pathology is caused by impaired balance in the work between the groups of flexors and extensors of the foot. Deformation of the foot and the toes creates a big problem in walking, in the selection and wearing of shoes. Legs lose their aesthetic appearance and sometimes look ugly (see photo).

According to the literature, the causes of deformation can be:
- flat feet;
- the wearing uncomfortable shoes (tight and narrow shoes with/or high heels);
- an overweight - (increased weight increases the load on the muscles and especially the ligaments of the foot);
- a hereditary predisposition;
- the diseases such as: rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, psoriasis;
- an age (the disease correlates with age);
- the traumatic foot injuries;
- the incorrectly selected shoes;
- a change in the hormonal background (pregnancy, menopause)
In all patients we observed with deformity, there were various disorders of the lumbar spine, primarily spondylosis and its complications.
At the same time, in the literature available to us for review, we did not come across with mentioning of the presence of spondylosis in this pathology, which in our opinion,
may be the one of the main cause of the violation of innervation with subsequent deformation of the foot and fingers.
Therefore, in addition to conventional medical measures, we without fail conduct manual therapy of the lumbar spine area.
Purpose: to improve the innervation of the muscles and joints of the foot.
Proceeding from the above, the definition of the disease can be formulated as follows:

Definition:

Deformation of the toes is a disease of the musculoskeletal system of the lower extremities, which is manifested by disorder of the normal anatomical position of the fingers and bones of the foot. This pathological process is the result of a number of reasons, the main of which is a violation of the innervation of the foot, running from the lumbar spine.
